WHY?

Because it’s fun.

Because Margarita Monday was already taken.

Because Joel thinks Amanda looks cute in her Sunday Go To Church dress.

Because we think it might be good for the kids.

Because everybody says they’re going to do it, but nobody ever does.

Because there are worse ways to nurse a hangover.

Because, for Joel, it feels oddly naughty.

But for Amanda, it feels oddly nice.

Because, though we suspect that God is dead, we still like to hedge our bets.

Because we thought that if we could actually get through 50 posts, we could write a book.

Because sometimes you need a break from sex and happy hour.

Because we made a pact that if we break up, we’ll still write this damn thing.

Because Amanda needs a reason to buy old lady hats.

Because, frankly, we’re a little jealous of the people who believe.

Because Baptists can’t have all the fun, Buddhists can’t have all the peace, Jews can’t have all the guilt, Jehovah’s Witnesses can’t all the apocalypse fantasies and Catholics can’t have all the cute altar boys.

  1. You guys! I love this idea! Can’t wait to see where this all goes!

  2. Someone needs to make a movie using the blog header as a starting point! It is awesome. If you make it down to the EUG I’ll explain Jewish guilt to you šŸ™‚

  3. Yikes! Just going into a church gave me a full-blown panic attack! Why yes, I AM a recovering ex-Jehovah’s Witness, whyever would you ask!?! I’m enjoying reading the blog; it feels like being a religious peeping Tom!

  4. Another ex-JW coming at ya!
    Congrats to both of you!

  5. This is an amazing undertaking. I look forward to reading your weekly posts.

  6. I’m really looking forward to reading. I lok back on my time as a JW and shake my head at myself.

  7. I have just stumbled upon this website whilst on my arvo tea break at work, and I cannot wait to begin reading it properly!

Thus far; just the very idea of what you guys are doing thrills me. I kind of wish I had of thought of it myself! Oh to be involved in such derring do!

However, I will need to settle for living my life vicariously through you two.

In the wise words of Julie Andrews; I will start at the very beginning, and read until I get myself up-to-date. I’m sure this is going to replace http://www.dullestblog.com as my ‘look-forward-to’ weekly read.

As an ex-JW myself, I applaud you already…and that’s without even having read any further. Bravo!

  8. OK. I’m back to report that I have caught up on both of your blogs, and I LOVE THEM!

I am even doing that annoying thing where I am reading stuff out loud to my (long-suffering and very disinterested) fiance.

What I would like to challenge you to, is a visit to a Kingdom Hall. Isn’t the memorial coming up?

    Whaddya say? šŸ™‚

  9. Hi Guys!

    Door of Hope 6pm

    Would love to have you!

  10. I’ve found your post to be quite inspiring!! Having been to the Apostalic Church in Brush Prairie AND The Bridge in PTown (seems we’ve swung both ways!!) ~ we share your hunger for truth. We’d love to visit with you, have you to our church ~ New Heights in Vancouver (we actually go to the West Campus in Downtown Vancouver). Maybe Sunday morning church and Bloody Mary’s after?

  11. “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. ISAIAH 55:6-7

“If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” JOHN 7:37-38 (words of Christ)

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. LAMENTATIONS 3:22-26

  12. Go to Door of Hope, if for no other reason but to hear some really great music, and the pastor has a pretty impressive beard.

  13. I’m sure you’ve heard of Solid Rock in your searches (I’m pretty sure its the biggest church in Portland), and if not I’m surprised. You should definitely put this church off until the summer time though, when its warm out, because they have church barbeque’s every week inbetween their services, so you can meet some of the very large congregation.
